Lake Bleu and Aiguille du Midi

Lake Bleu and Aiguille du Midi

This is sunset taken from Lake Bleu in the French Alps. If you look closely, you can see Aiguille du Midi on top of the peak. The evening we camped here was an experience to say the least. A storm rolled in around 4:00am in the morning. Thinking it would just blow over, we waited for hours. Well, it doesn't just blow over in the French Alps. It could last the entire day. Around 8:00am, the wind had ripped out the stakes from our tents and it was literrally raining sideways. Around 9:00am we decided to pack up and hike back to the gondola for the ride down the mountain. It was a great test for our rain gear this morning. We found out the gondola was not running that day due to the storm and dangerous conditions. We had breakfast in the gondola station preparing to hike 3000 vertical feet down the mountain. The gondola operator then appeared and said we had 2 minutes to get ready and he'd take us down the mountain. We were the only ones to ride the gondola that day. It was a HUGE relief not having to hike down the mountain in those conditions.
